India Today In ‘Well-Managed’ Position Compared To others: PM Modi On COVID-19 Crisis

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that India’s holistic and integrated approach to dealing with the coronovirus crisis is a step in the right direction and noted that the country is in a “well-managed” position regarding the spread of the disease.

In his address to the nation, Modi extended the nationwide bandh till 3 May. The previously announced 21-day lockout was to end today.

“When we had only 550 Corona cases, India itself took the major step of a full 21-day lockdown. India did not wait for the problem to escalate. Rather, we attempted to nip the problem in the bud itself, by taking quick decisions as soon as it arose,” the PM said in his address to the nation.

Modi said: “Before we had even a single case of Corona, India started screening passengers arriving from Corona affected at airports. Before the corona patients reached 100, India had all of them 14-day isolation was made compulsory for all those coming in from abroad. Malls, clubs and gyms were shut down in many places.”

“It is not correct to compare our position with any other country in such a crisis. However, it is also true that if we look at the data related to Corona in the world’s big powerful countries, India is very well managed today position,” PM said.

“A month and a half ago, many countries were on par with India in case of corona infection. But today, corona cases in those countries are 25 to 30 times higher than in India. Thousands of people have tragically died in those countries,” the Prime Minister added.

Calling India’s approach ‘holistic and integrated’, the PM said that had India not taken prompt and decisive action, the situation would have been different. “If India had not taken a holistic and unified approach by taking prompt and decisive action, India’s position today would have been completely different.”

He further said that the decisions India took were in the right direction. Modi commented, “It is clear from the experience of the last few days that we have chosen the right path. Our country has benefited immensely from social discrimination and lockdown.”
