India Win An ICC ODI Tournament After 12 Years, Clinch Most Champions Trophy Titles

Mumbai: India etched their name in the record books by securing their third ICC Champions Trophy title, the most by any team, with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final. The win also ended India’s 12-year wait for an ICC ODI trophy, marking their seventh ICC tournament triumph overall. Chasing a target of 252, India reached 254/6 in 49 overs to seal the historic win.

New Zealand, after winning the toss and opting to bat, posted 251/7. Their innings had a promising start, with Will Young and Rachin Ravindra capitalizing on early opportunities. However, Indian spinners tightened their grip in the middle overs, slowing the scoring rate significantly. Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets each, stifling New Zealand’s momentum between overs 11 and 30.

Ravindra’s brisk 37 off 29 balls came to an end when Kuldeep bowled him, while the in-form Kane Williamson was dismissed shortly after via a sharp caught-and-bowled effort by Kuldeep. Tom Latham fell lbw to Ravindra Jadeja for 14, and Glenn Phillips contributed 34 off 52 balls before Varun knocked over his stumps. Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings with a steady 63 off 101 balls, while Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten half-century gave New Zealand a late boost.

Despite a strong 105-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, India faced tense moments in the chase. Glenn Phillips took a spectacular catch to dismiss Gill for 31 off Mitchell Santner’s bowling, while Michael Bracewell trapped Virat Kohli lbw for just 1. Rohit, who played a captain’s knock of 76, was stumped off Rachin Ravindra’s bowling.

New Zealand’s fightback continued as Ravindra took another sharp catch to dismiss Shreyas Iyer on 48, and Axar Patel fell soon after, caught by Will O’Rourke off Bracewell. Hardik Pandya’s quickfire 18-run cameo ended in the 48th over, caught and bowled by Kyle Jamieson.

However, KL Rahul (41*) and Ravindra Jadeja (39*) kept their cool under pressure, guiding India home in the penultimate over and sealing a landmark victory. The win extended India’s unbeaten run in the tournament, having secured their place in the final with a commanding semi-final victory over Australia.
