Mumbai: In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, India kicked off their ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Ireland at Nassau County Stadium in New York on Wednesday.
Highlights of the match included a solid half-century by skipper Rohit Sharma, explosive finishing by Rishabh Pant, and fiery bowling spells from Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
India’s chase of a modest 97-run target began with openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Despite a challenging pitch, Rohit survived a couple of close calls, while Kohli was dismissed for just 1 run after a top edge off Mark Adair landed in the hands of Benjamin White, leaving India at 22/1 in 2.4 overs.
Rohit and Pant then steadied the innings, guiding India to 39/1 at the end of the powerplay with some elegant strokes. Rohit reached his half-century in just 36 balls, featuring four boundaries and three sixes.
Unfortunately, he retired hurt after scoring 52, paving the way for Suryakumar Yadav. Pant continued his aggressive play, remaining unbeaten on 36 and hitting the winning shot with a six, sealing India’s victory at 97/2 in 11.4 overs.
Earlier, India’s bowlers set the tone by restricting Ireland to a mere 96 runs.
Arshdeep Singh’s fiery third over dismantled the opening partnership, dismissing Paul Stirling and Andrew Balbirnie. Hardik Pandya’s three-wicket haul and crucial contributions from Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, who took two wickets each, kept Ireland on the back foot. Gareth Delany was the only standout for Ireland, scoring a fighting 26 runs.
Ireland’s batting lineup faltered under the relentless pressure from Indian bowlers, with only three players reaching double figures.
Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance and disciplined bowling from the rest of the attack ensured Ireland never gained momentum.
India’s comprehensive win in the eighth match of the T20 World Cup showcased their readiness and depth, setting a strong foundation for their campaign in the tournament.
