India’s 18-year-old Gukesh D Becomes Youngest-ever World Chess Champion

Mumbai: Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh made history on Thursday by defeating reigning champion Ding Liren to claim the FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 title. At just 18 years old, Gukesh became the youngest-ever undisputed classical chess world champion, surpassing the legendary Garry Kasparov, who won the title at 22 in 1985.

Gukesh secured the championship with 7.5 points to Ding Liren’s 6.5 after clinching victory in the 14th and final classical game of the match, which had appeared destined for a draw. Overcome with emotion, Gukesh broke down in tears as he realized the magnitude of his achievement.

This triumph makes Gukesh only the second Indian to hold the world chess title, following in the footsteps of five-time champion Viswanathan Anand, who last won the crown in 2013. Gukesh entered the match as the youngest challenger to the world title, having earned his spot by winning the Candidates Tournament earlier this year.
