India’s 3rd COVID-19 Wave Likely This Month, May Peak In Oct: Bloomberg Report

Mumbai: India may see a rise in COVID-19 infections as the third wave begins as early as August, Bloomberg reported citing researchers led by Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agrawal at IIT in Hyderabad and Kanpur.

Bloomberg, citing researchers led by Mathukumalli Vidyasagar and Manindra Agarwal at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad and Kanpur, respectively, reported that the rise in Covid-19 cases would accelerate the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which peaked in October.

Vidyasagar told Bloomberg in an email that states with high Covid-19 cases, such as Kerala and Maharashtra, could “skew the picture.”

The third wave of Covid-19 is unlikely to be as brutal as the second wave when India recorded over 400,000 cases per day and then came down. The predictions of the researchers, who earlier this year accurately predicted a reduction in the increase in Covid-19 cases, are based on a mathematical model.

In May, Vidyasagar, a professor at IIT Hyderabad, said that India’s coronavirus outbreak could peak in the coming days based on mathematical models.

“We predict that the peak will come within a few days. As per current estimates, we should be registering 20,000 cases daily by the end of June. We will revise it as needed,” Vidyasagar told Bloomberg by email.

India on Sunday reported 41,831 Covid-19 cases and 541 deaths, even as the Center warned 10 states, including Kerala, Maharashtra, and the northeastern regions, amid rising infections and preventing the spread of coronavirus from them.
