India’s Tariff Is Unacceptable: Donald Trump Asked To Meet PM Modi At The G20 Summit

Mumbai: Prior to meeting PM Narendra Modi, during the G20 summit, Donald Trump targeted the Modi government and said that India’s tariff on American products is “unacceptable” and should be withdrawn.

Tensions between both the country raised after Trump announced the end of preferential trade with India and the Modi government hit back with retaliatory tariffs on 28 US products earlier this month.

After stalling for several months, the Modi government’s decision to introduce tariff on American products at the beginning of this month has come into force. The action was motivated by the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw the preferential access given to Indian products.

On Thursday morning, as Trump reached Japan for the G20 Summit, where he will be meeting PM Modi, the US President tweeted: “I look forward to speaking with Prime Minister Modi about the fact that India, for years having put very high Tariffs against the United States, just recently increased the Tariffs even further. This is unacceptable and the Tariffs must be withdrawn!”

The US had significantly hiked custom duty on steel and aluminium products.

It is ahead of Modi’s meeting with Donald Trump at the G20 Summit. In addition to the summit discussions, the two leaders are expected to hold a bilateral meeting on Friday at the Osaka Summit.

President Trump is likely to unveil the controversial issue of Tariff imposed on American products.
