INR 89 Lakh Collected In Fines From Traffic Rule Violators On New Years Eve In Mumbai

Mumbai: Amid the New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Mumbai Traffic Police penalised 17,800 individuals for violating traffic regulations, collecting fines amounting to ₹89.19 lakh, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

To ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow, authorities implemented stringent security measures across popular celebration spots, including the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Bandstand, and Juhu Chowpatty.

Robust enforcement measures were undertaken to maintain order on the roads, resulting in e-challans being issued to violators for various offenses,” said a traffic police official.

Key offenses included obstructing traffic, drunken driving, and ignoring basic safety norms such as wearing helmets and seat belts. Officials reported the following figures for the night:

  • Obstructing free flow of traffic: 2,893
  • Riding without a helmet: 1,923 R
  • Refusal to ply: 1,976
  • Driving through a red traffic light:1,731
  • One-way violations: 868
  • Speed limit violations: 842
  • Driving without a licence: 581
  • Not stopping at the stop line: 440
  • Driving without a seatbelt: 432
  • Not wearing uniform (for commercial drivers): 200
  • Drunken driving: 153
  • Riding triples on a motorbike: 123
  • Using mobile phones while driving: 109
  • Driving on the wrong side:40
  • Honking violations: 20
  • Dangerous driving: 2
  • Other violations under the Motor Vehicle Act: 5,467

The crackdown was part of a coordinated effort to ensure public safety during the festivities. Police stated that their efforts significantly reduced the risk of accidents and incidents across the city during the celebrations.

The Mumbai Traffic Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining order on the roads and urged citizens to follow traffic rules to ensure everyone’s safety.
