Intense Rainfall Likely For Next 3-4 Hrs In Mumbai, Thane: IMD
Mumbai: Intense to very intense spells of rain are expected over the next three to four hours in isolated places in Thane, Mumbai, and Palghar districts, according to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Mumbai. The forecast also predicts the possibility of thunder, lightning, and gusty winds in some areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to take precautions while venturing outside.
Advisory and Precautions
In response to the forecast, Mumbai police have issued a rainfall advisory, urging people to step out of their homes only if necessary and to take all necessary precautions. “In view of the continuous and heavy rains in Mumbai, citizens are requested to avoid going to the coastal areas and move out of their houses only if necessary. Take precautions and Dial 100 in case of emergency,” the advisory stated.
Flight Diversions and Transport Disruptions
Bad weather conditions have already caused disruptions, with a Vistara flight from Amritsar to Mumbai being rerouted to Ahmedabad on Sunday. Vistara Airlines confirmed in an official statement that Flight UK696 from Amritsar to Mumbai was diverted due to adverse weather conditions at Mumbai airport and was expected to arrive in Ahmedabad at 12.15 hours.
Flooding and Traffic Issues
Incessant rains have continued in Mumbai throughout the week, prompting the RMC to issue a yellow alert, in effect until July 24. Sunday’s forecasted temperatures are expected to range from a high of 29°C to a low of 25°C. The monsoon covered the entire country six days ahead of its normal schedule, leading to severe flooding and traffic disruptions.
Several roads have been closed and traffic has been redirected due to extensive flooding. The Eastern Express Highway experienced significant traffic congestion in the morning, and several subway stations were submerged, disrupting public transport. Residential areas, particularly Dadar, Worli, Parel, Matunga, Mahim, and Prabhadevi, experienced heavy waterlogging. Rainwater seeped into homes in low-lying areas, causing significant structural damage.
Safety Measures
Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid coastal areas. Emergency services are on high alert, and citizens are encouraged to dial 100 in case of emergencies. The Mumbai police and local authorities are working to manage the situation and ensure public safety.
As heavy rains continue to lash Mumbai and its surrounding areas, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
