International Court of Justice All Set For Kulbhushan Jadhav Verdict Today

Mumbai: International Court of Justice (ICJ) is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on an important matter related to Indian National Kulbhushan Jadhav on Wednesday, who has been awarded death sentence by a Pakistan military court, a move challenged by India.

In April 2017, Pakistan’s military court sentenced a former naval officer Jadhav to death for “espionage and terrorism”, which caused widespread anger in India.

During the public meeting at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands, the court will be adjudged today by the court’s president Abdulkavi Ahmed Yusuf.

While sitting in public, the ICJ can possibly order Pakistan to postpone death sentence or order a reconsideration in the civil court and provide consular access to Jadhav.

In February this year, the 15-member ICJ under the leadership of Justice Yusuf heard oral submissions by India and Pakistan in the matter and later secured its decision. The proceedings of the case were completed in two years.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Muhammad Faisal said that Pakistan has fully fought the case before the ICJ, saying that whatever decision the ICJ has ruled out, it will be accepted.

Earlier, Jadhav accused the Pakistani government of arresting him in the Pakistani province of Balochistan for an allegation of espionage for terrorism and India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing. On April 10, 2017, the Indian Foreign Ministry said that he had been abducted from Iran last year and his subsequent presence in Pakistan has never been reliable.

On 10 April 2017, Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Field General Court Martial in Pakistan. On 18 May 2017, the International Court of Justice stayed the execution pending the final judgement on the case
