Islam Says Nupur Sharma Should Be Forgiven: Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind

Mumbai: Amid the ongoing controversy over remarks on Prophet Muhammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind’s Suhaib Qasmi said she should be forgiven as per Islam.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Qasmi said the Muslim scholars’ body disagreed with the nationwide protests in the wake of his remarks, “We are not going to take law into our own hands.”

“Islam says Nupur Sharma should be forgiven. We disagree with the protests that started across the country after Friday prayers against Nupur Sharma and her derogatory remarks.”

Jamaat Ulama-e-Hind also welcomed the decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to suspend Sharma.

“We are welcoming the decision of the law because India is the law of the land and we are not going to take the law into our own hands. The law does not allow breaking the rules by coming on the road,” he told reporters in the national capital.

The organization has also decided to issue a ‘fatwa’ urging people not to support any form of violence in relation to Sharma and his remarks on the Prophet.

Jamaat said, there will be a fatwa against Asaduddin Owaisi and Mohammad Madani.

It appealed to the government to conduct an inquiry against several Muslim organizations and their funding, saying it would not allow other Muslim organizations to incite violence.

The controversy erupted after Sharma allegedly made controversial remarks against Prophet, who was later suspended from the primary membership of the party.

Protests and incidents of violence were witnessed in different parts of the country when Sharma made remarks insulting Muslims on the personal life of the Prophet during a heated TV debate. Two people died during a violent demonstration in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

Many Muslim-majority countries have also condemned India for Sharma’s provocative statement.
