Israel Kills Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah in Targeted Airstrike
Mumbai: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the death of Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, in a targeted airstrike on the group’s headquarters in Beirut.
The strike, carried out by Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets, also killed Ali Karki, Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front. The operation was part of Israel’s military offensive named “New Order,” aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s leadership.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the IDF said, “Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world.” The airstrike reportedly hit Hezbollah’s central command, located underground beneath a residential building in the Dahieh district of Beirut. Israel claimed precise intelligence indicated that senior Hezbollah commanders were present at the site, actively planning terrorist activities against Israel.
During his 32-year tenure as leader of Hezbollah, Nasrallah is said to have orchestrated numerous attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers and directed terrorist operations worldwide. The IDF described Nasrallah as the “central decision-maker” of Hezbollah, responsible for strategic and tactical decisions in its militant operations.
The attack comes as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, with Hezbollah joining Hamas in its ongoing war against Israel, which began on October 8.
Israeli airstrikes have targeted Beirut heavily in recent days, with Saturday’s bombing being one of the most significant assaults in the city since the outbreak of the conflict.
The killing of Nasrallah is expected to heighten regional tensions, particularly with Iran, Hezbollah’s primary backer. In response to the growing conflict, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council on Friday, according to sources cited by The New York Times.
As the war continues to escalate, there are concerns that the violence may spill over into a broader regional conflict, potentially drawing in Iran and the United States, both of whom are heavily invested in the opposing sides of the war.
Hezbollah’s involvement in the conflict marks a dangerous new phase in the Israel-Gaza war, as it opens a second front for Israel, pushing Lebanon deeper into the chaos of the conflict.
