Mumbai: The Israeli military has announced heightened alert levels amid concerns of a broader conflict following the reported killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. The news was confirmed during a media briefing on Saturday by Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani, who expressed hope that the development would prompt a shift in Hezbollah’s activities.
“We hope this will change Hezbollah’s actions,” said Shoshani. Despite the significant blow to the Iran-backed militia group, Shoshani noted that it would take time to fully weaken Hezbollah’s operational capabilities.
“We’ve seen Hezbollah carry out attacks against us for a year. It’s safe to assume that they are going to continue or attempt further attacks.”
Hezbollah, widely regarded as a proxy for Iran, has been a longstanding adversary of Israel. Tensions between the two have escalated over the past year, with frequent skirmishes and hostile exchanges. Shoshani emphasized that Hezbollah’s actions are heavily influenced by Iran, which also supports other militant groups like Hamas.
In response to the heightened threat, the Israeli military has kept much of the country on high alert, though no new instructions have been issued regarding civilian preparedness. “Hezbollah has been escalating this for a year… Iran is obviously behind this, it’s no secret,” Shoshani added.
He reiterated that Israel is ready for further escalation, stating, “We’ve been in a wider escalation, a multi-front war, for a year. Our forces are on high alert, our intelligence is actively monitoring these threats.”
With the potential for increased retaliation from Hezbollah or its allies, the situation remains tense, and Israel is bracing for continued hostilities in the region.
