I’ve Experienced It, Will Speak When I’m Ready: Anushka On #MeToo
Mumbai: Actor and philanthropist Anushka Ranjan recently revealed that she has experienced uncomfortable situations in the entertainment industry, even though she comes from a privileged and well-connected background. During an interview with India Today, Anushka candidly spoke about her #MeToo experience, stating that she has faced such incidents firsthand.
When asked if she had ever encountered a situation that made her feel unsafe, Anushka responded, “Yes, I have experienced this first-hand as well. I would like to speak about it at length at some point, when I’m ready and exactly know what I want to say.” She explained that while it wasn’t physical gestures that made her uncomfortable, certain comments from people had a lasting impact. As a result, she chose to avoid approaching those individuals for work, even if it meant passing on potential opportunities.
“It wasn’t the gestures as such, but it was those words that were said to me that made me feel uncomfortable. From that day until today, I have not felt the need ever to approach that person, irrespective of whether that job opportunity may come or not. Life is a circle because what goes around, comes around, and I believe in that,” she added, emphasizing her belief in karma.
Anushka also spoke about the ongoing discussions around the #MeToo movement, particularly in the South Indian film industry, and referenced the Hema Committee report that has garnered attention in the industry. She admitted that handling such situations, even as a confident and straightforward individual, can be incredibly difficult. “No matter how headstrong or confident I am as an individual, one still feels very vulnerable in these situations because you know the kind of conversation the other person is having with you. And deep down you know there’s something that ain’t right,” she concluded.
In addition to her work as an actor, Anushka has been actively involved in philanthropy for the past 15 years. Through her NGO initiative, BETI, she has organized some of the largest charity events in India, raising funds for girl child education. Anushka has been a passionate advocate for empowering young girls and women, helping them overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
