Jammu & Kashmir: Five Politicians Released From House Arrest

However, no timeline has yet been given for the release of the three former chief ministers

Mumbai: In a huge development, it is reported that five political leaders were released from detention in Srinagar, more than four months after the Center, on 5 August, announced the repeal of Article 370, thus Jammu and Special status of Kashmir revoked.

Several prominent politicians, including three former chief ministers-Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have now been placed under house arrest under the government’s move in view of the law and order situation in the former state.

Of the five leaders released on Monday from the MLA hostel, while two are from Abdullah’s National Conference (NC), the rest are from Mehbooba Mufti People’s Democratic Party (PDP). They are Ishfaq Jabbar and Ghulam Nabi Bhatt (NC) and Yasir Reshi, Bashir Ahmed Mir and Zahoor Mir (PDP).

However, no timeline has yet been given for the release of the three former chief ministers.

The Center has said that all three will be released at the ‘appropriate’ time. Of the three, Farooq Abdullah has been detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA).

The five leaders were released on the orders of the administration of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir. As part of the August 5 move, the erstwhile state was also divided into two separate centres of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, both became UTs on October 31.
