Jammu & Kashmir: Is Article 35A Been Abrogated?

Mumbai: The hashtag operation Kashmir is now trending on twitter and people from the Kashmir are showing concerns about the growing tensions in the region. People are spotted hoarding food and necessary materials in their houses with a fear of future military calamities. The locals, civil officers, teachers and political leaders have no idea about what is happening around.

When asked to the government officials they have decided to observe silence in any of this matter. Neither the state nor the central administrations are ready to explain the abrupt decision of appointing the paramilitary forces and the aeroplanes in the Jammu and Kashmir region. The rumours are adding more to the already existing confusion.

Speculations are the troops were deployed for preventing any law and order situations from happening in the region. The sudden note asking the Amarnath pilgrims to curtail their stay in the stay has also made the locals afraid of what will happen next. The advisory note that came on 2nd August that is on Friday stated that there were possibilities of terror attack in the Jammu and Kashmir region. On Friday the state government had asked the pilgrims to curtail their stay in the region and leave the state immediately. The locals are the ones demanding clarification on the government’s move.

The terrorist attack was the second thing that came to everyone’s life, the very first thing was the abolition of 35A act. The appointment of extra paramilitary forces itself made the people uncomfortable and people feared that the government could abolish the 35A act that grants special status to the Jammu and Kashmir region. If the article 35A is abrogated it will lead to Constitutional crisis and India’s only link to that region will be broken. The article 370 provides India to look after the state’s defence, external affairs and communications and if this article is abrogated the state will be declared as an independent.

And when questions about same were raised, Kashmir’s governor Satya Pal Malik states that “these speculations are just rumours, don’t pay heed to them” The government has no plans to abrogate Article 35A.

though the government tried to calm down the panic the citizens couldn’t stop panicking due to the lack of clarity, Government’s uncertain replies and appointment of paramilitary troops in the region. The suspense from the government’s side is only adding panic to people’s mind while clarity seems miles away.
