Japan Confirms Cases Of New Coronavirus Variant From United Kingdom

Mumbai: Japan’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the first cases of infection with a new variant of the identified coronavirus in the UK.

Five arrived between 18 December and 21 December, before Japan extended border controls for those entering from Britain. One man developed fatigue in the 60s, but the other four were without symptoms.

Health Minister Norihisa Tamura said the five were sent directly from the airports for quarantine.

The ministry said in a statement that after testing positive for the virus, further analysis was conducted at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, which revealed that they had a British version that was 70 percent higher.

Shigeru Omi, the head of a government task force, called for strict border controls to stop new variants.
