J&K Separatist Leader Yasin Malik Convicted In Terror Funding Case In Delhi

Mumbai: Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik has been convicted in a 2017 terror funding case by an NIA court in Delhi after he pleaded guilty, ANI reported.

The court said it would start hearing arguments on May 25 to decide the quantum of punishment for Yasin Malik. Special Judge Praveen Singh will hear arguments with regard to the quantum of punishment for the offences levelled against Malik.

Earlier, the separatist leader from Jammu and Kashmir had admitted to charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

Malik was charged under UAPA sections 16 (terrorist act), 17 (raising funds for the terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist acts), 20 (being a member of a terrorist gang or organization) and 120-B. was charged under criminal conspiracy) and section 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He reportedly did not contest the charges before the court.

According to the charge sheet filed in connection with the case, charges were also filed against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin.

Apart from this, Yasin Malik, Shabbir Shah, Masarat Alam, former MLA Rashid Engineer, businessman Zahoor Ahmed Shah Watali, Bitta Karate, Aftab Ahmed Shah, Avatar Ahmad Shah, Naeem Khan, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, alias Peer Saifullah and others have also been charged by the court.

“The above analysis reflects that the statements of witnesses and documentary evidence have connected almost all the accused with each other and to a common object of secession, to the commonality of means they were to use, their close association to terrorist/terrorist organisations under the guiding hand and funding of Pakistani establishment,” the NIA special Judge Praveen Singh had said during the earlier hearing.
