Joko Widodo Of Indonesia Won Second Term As President

Mumbai: Joko Widodo of Indonesia has been re-elected as the president of the world’s third largest democracy, the Election Commission said on Tuesday, defeating opponent Prabowo Subianto, retired general, who has consistently vowed to challenge any victory for the incumbent leader.

The Commission had hoped that the official results of the 17 April elections in the Southeast Asian nation will be declared 260 million Wednesday.

The Election Commission said that Widodo and his current vice-president Ma’ruf Amin won the election from 55.5 per cent to 44.5 per cent on Sub.5o and Sandiaga Uno.

“The verdict was announced on 21 May … and will be effective immediately,” said the commission’s chair, Arid Budiman, in a live stream announcement that was broadcast on the main media.

Around 32,000 security personnel were being deployed in the capital Jakarta, in which the front of the General Election Commission’s downtown office was also barricaded with razor wire.

Last month, Indonesia had its largest election, more than 190 million registered voters and a record 245,000 candidates voted for the presidential post, parliamentary seats and local legislative posts in a day.
