Karnataka Allows Shops, Other Businesses To Remain Open 24×7

Mumbai: The state government on Saturday said that all shops and commercial establishments employing ten or more people in Karnataka are now allowed to operate on a 24×7 basis. The move aims to generate employment and accelerate economic growth.

The state government said in a circular that no employee should work more than ten hours a day.

“All employers shall not require any person to work more than eight hours in any day and forty-eight hours in any week or a period of work not exceeding ten hours, including additional time in any day.” said.

The government said that all employees are entitled to at least one week’s leave. It states that if an employee is made to work more than eight hours a day, he must pay an overtime allowance.

Women employees will not be allowed to work more than 8.00 am on any day under normal conditions.

The government stated, “Provided that after obtaining written consent from a female employee, an employer may permit her to work between 8 am and 6 am to provide adequate security for her dignity, honour and safety.”

The government said that employers or managers will face shift deadlines.

“If employees are found to be working after any leave or normal duty hours without proper indenture of overtime, punitive action initiated against the employer/manager under the Karnataka Shops and Establishments Act and Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Rules,” the notification read.

The new system shall be applicable for the next three years, the state government added.
