Karnataka Bans Bursting Of Firecrackers On Diwali

Mumbai: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa said on Friday that the state government has decided to ban firecrackers during Diwali this year.

Speaking to the media on Friday, BS Yeddiyurappa said, “Due to COVID-19 and other reasons, we have decided to ban fireworks during Deepawali this year. We held discussions before taking this decision. A government order will be issued shortly.”

While the CM has said that they will ban the bursting of firecrackers, it is not yet clear whether the ban will increase their sales as well. “We will issue a detailed government order,” a health department official said.

Health Minister of Karnataka K Sudhakar said on Thursday that firecrackers could hurt people who have been infected with coronavirus, and told residents to avoid bursting them this Diwali.

Karnataka reported over 3,100 coronavirus cases and 31 deaths on Thursday, taking the total infections to over 8.38 lakh.
