Mumbai: Reacting to the Home Minister Amit Shah’s ‘one nation one language’ call, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa rejected it saying “We will never compromise Kannada importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture.”

“All official languages in our country are equal. However, as far as Karnataka is concerned, Kannada is the principal language. We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promoting Kannada and our state’s culture”, tweeted Yediyurappa.

On the occasion of Hindi Day on 14 September, Shah said in a tweet that a common language would become “a symbol of India’s global identity”.The Home Minister had insisted that India needed a national language so that it could be positioned among foreign languages. He emphasized that the Hindi language has that stronghold and capability in our nation and was therefore seen by the freedom fighters as the ‘official language’.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan targeted Shah for one nation and one language, terming his statement as “a war cry” against the non-Hindi speaking mother tongue. “No Indian should feel isolated because of the language”, Vijayan had said.

“India’s strength is its ability to embrace diversity. Sangh Parivar must relinquish divisive policies. They must realize that people can see through the ploy, that this is an attempt to divert attention from the real problems. The claim that Hindi unifies our country is absurd. That language is not the mother tongue of a majority of Indians.

The move to inflict Hindi upon them amounts to enslaving them. Union Minister’s statement is a war cry against the mother tongues of non-Hindi speaking people,” the Kerala CM had tweeted.
