Mumbai: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and state water resources minister Ramesh Jarkiholi resigned from his post on Wednesday, as he was involved in the sex scandal’.
A CD showed the Karnataka minister showing intimacy with an unknown woman and the video clip was widely circulated by Kannada news channels. Filing a police complaint on Tuesday, social activist Dinesh Kallahalli alleged that Ramesh Jarkholi sexually harassed a servant and threatened her and her family to suffer dire consequences.
Ramesh Jarkiholi submitted his resignation to Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa. His letter to CM BSY stated that the allegations levelled against him are “far from the truth”. He said in the letter that “there should be an impartial inquiry considering resignation on moral grounds”
After sexual harassment allegations against Ramesh, Jarkholi surfaced and a large-scale controversy began, the opposition demanded the immediate resignation of Ramesh Jarkholi and also filed an FIR against him.
The BJP-led Karnataka government on Wednesday indicated that the party would seek the resignation of Ramesh Jarkiholi.
Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Wednesday that the police would inquire about sexual harassment allegations against Ramesh Jarkholi. Basavaraj Bommai said, “Whatever the complaint is, on the basis of the complaint we are making inquiries, as the law is doing.”
In response to a question from the opposition on the demand for Ramesh Jarkiholi’s resignation, Bommai said, “Our party will take a decision.”
Seeking immediate resignation of Jarakiholi and filing an FIR, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah said, “If that party (BJP) feels ashamed and if they respect human values, they will have to resign immediately.”
“This is national news, if the government feels ashamed, it will have to resign immediately, and file an FIR immediately,” he told reporters.
Reacting to the allegations, Ramesh had told some news channels that he was shocked and the videos were 100 per cent fake, as he also sought an investigation.
Police have assured necessary action after obtaining more details and said they will also interrogate the woman.
