Karnataka: Siddaramaiah Resigns As Congress Legislative Party leader, LoP

Mumbai: Siddaramaiah on Monday resigned as the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) and congress legislative party leader after the party suffered a blow in the Karnataka bypolls.

I have accepted the result, ”Siddaramaiah told reporters.

He said that he has also resigned as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

“I have also resigned as the Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly,” he said.

Siddaramaiah further said that he would send a copy of his resignation to senior Congress leader KC Venugopal and KPCC President.

“I hoped that voters could vote against unqualified legislators who sold themselves. I felt that they would be punished and I expected this to happen. My expectations have gone wrong,” he said.

The by-polls were held to fill the vacancies caused by the disqualification of 17 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs, whose revolt led to collapse of the H D Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in July and paved the way for BJP to come to power.

A total of 15 of 17 seats went to the polls — Athani, Kagawad, Gokak, Yellapur, Hirekerur, Ranebennur, Vijayanagara, Chikkaballapur, Hoskote, KR Pura, Yeswanthpur, Mahalakshmi Layout, Shivajinagar, Krishnarajpet and Hunsur. Twelve of the 15 seats were held by the Congress and three by JD(S).
