Karnataka, The Hub For Cutting-Edge Nano Research And Applications Curtains Drawn On The Decennial Edition Of Bengaluru India Nano

Mumbai :  Curtains were drawn on the decennial edition of Bengaluru India Nano today at The Lalit Ashok. The premiere event on Nano technology saw a participation by more than 657 delegates from leading institutes across India and countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Poland and Singapore.  

Over 118 posters were presented by young researchers and 51 exhibitors participated and showcased their emerging technologies and products including India Oil, Tata Steel, Oxford instruments, Horiba Scientific, HHV, DSS image Tech, DST Nano mission and many more. To promote the Nano Science technology amongst students across India, road shows have been organised in 18 cities including Tier I & Tier II cities.    

Honourable Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, said that it is always a stimulating experience to be part of events related to science and technology. He added that Karnataka is in the forefront of Nanotechnology and its capital Bengaluru is the science capital of India. He expressed confidence that Karnataka will lead the country in nanotechnology in the years to come and assured complete support to nanotechnology.

The three-day event, with the theme “Nano for a Better World”, included 18 sessions on the emergence of Nanotechnology in various aspects of the health sector, engineering and technology and brainstorming deliberations along with networking by 41 international and national speakers. Students from 61 leading institutes of India, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Madras, ICT, IISc, JNCASR, IISER, VIT participated in various activities conducted during the event. 

The Director of  IIT Delhi, Prof. Ram Gopal Rao, speaking on the occasion, said, “Bengaluru India Nano 2018 has always added a different flavour as it not only boosts the confidence of aspiring students but also the other industry leaders to skill themselves to offer something to the industries especially manufacturing, textiles and health. Apart from this, it also offers an opportunity for startups to meet and speak to industry leaders.” 

Research Industry collaboration Hub (RICH) witnessed 6 start-ups presenting their innovative technologies to industry captains and investors. Nano for the Young Programme was attended by over 650 under graduate students from across Karnataka.  

Prof. Ajay K Sood, FRS, FNA FASc, FNASc, FTWAS, Year of Science Professor, Department of Physics, IISc-Bengaluru, said the key focus is to create excitement among the young and aspiring students to opt nano as their subject in their further studies.  The industry and academia come together to discuss ways to generate nanotechnology opportunities, the loopholes and the ways to fill them in order to offer the best practices to the coming generation at the unique platform offered by Bengaluru India Nano 2018, Prof. Sood said. The event has been facilitating cross-national talks since its inception, he added.  

Shri. Gaurav Gupta, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of IT, BT and Science and Technology and Commerce and Industries, Government of Karnataka, thanking the gathering, said that Nanotechnology has created a great deal of excitement all over the world as it helps solve key problems in the various fields. He said that Nanotechnology has enabled innumerable disruptive technologies and offers of opportunities for industries. He said that the Government of Karnataka has recognised this and has been organising the premier flagship event Bengaluru India Nano since 2009.  

The internationally acclaimed event was organised by Department of Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka in association with Jawaharlal Nehru Centre Applied Scientific Research. This International Event was organised under the guidance of Karnataka’s Vision Group on Nanotechnology spearheaded by Bharat Ratna Prof CNR Rao. 

Prof Rao, looking back at the memorable journey of Bengaluru India Nano, said, “It is the decennial celebrations of Bengaluru India Nano and it is a  tremendous journey for Karnataka as we were the only state that took the initiative to organise this in the national and international level. The awareness about nano technology has been spread all over India with road shows in various parts of the country and thereby inspiring children. The tremendous work taken place in the last 10 years has resulted in Bangalore becoming synonymous with nano technology.” 

He applauded the Government of Karnataka for the tremendous encouragement for several scientific research in the field of nano science. He also added that he has been challenging the Researchers  Bengaluru to discover a nano nose to detect cancer. 

Prof. C.N.R. Rao Bengaluru INDIA NANO Science 2018 Awards: Dr S Sampath Professor, Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, was awarded the Prof. C.N.R. Rao Bengaluru INDIA NANO Science 2018 Award with a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh by CNR Rao Foundation. The award was presented by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri H D Kumaraswamy. 

Nano Excellence Awards 2018: Bharat Ratna Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS, JNCASR and Shri K. J. George, Hon’ble Minister for IT, BT and S&T, presented the Bengaluru INDIA NANO Innovation Award 2018, Karnataka DST Nanoscience Fellowships and Malhotra Weikfield Foundation Nano Science Fellowship Awards at the Nano Excellence Awards 2018 organised by Bengaluru India Nano 2018. Bengaluru INDIA NANO Innovation Award 2018 was presented to Dr. Tata Narasinga Rao, New Materials (ARCI), on 6 December, Thursday, at The Lalit Ashok. The award carried Rs. 50,000 prize.  

Karnataka DST NanoScience Fellowships: Karnataka DST Nanoscience Fellowships were bagged by Ms Papri Chakraborty of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, Ms Dipanwita Chatterjee, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Mr Anirban Dutta, Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata and Mr Ramesh Naidu Jenjti, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The fellowships carry prize money of Rs 50,000 each. 

Malhotra Weikfield Foundation NanoScience Fellowship Awards: Ms Kimberly Hsieh Sui Mee from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and Mr Anand Kumar Roy from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) were presented the Malhotra Weikfield Foundation NanoScience Fellowship Awards along with a prize amount of Rs. 50,000 each. 

NanoSparx Awards: The first place for NanoSparx, with a prize money of Rs 50,000 was bagged by Shweta Chawla of Institute of Chemical Technology while the team Deepa Warrier, Suchitra Godhia and Tejaswita Gholap from Bombay College of Pharmacy and Sindhu Shree from Visvsevaraya Technological University were the joint winners with a prize money of Rs 25,000 each.

Best poster award winners: The best poster award winners are Pratap Vishnoi, Lakshay Dheer from JNCASR, Nisha Yadav from Shiv Nadar University, Ida M Anna from Amrita Centre for Nanosciences, Rashmi C.M from University of Agricultural Sciences Bangalore, Mohammad Bodiuzzaman from IIT Madras, Narendra Chundi from ARCI, Deepika Gupta from Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Vinayakumara DR from National Institute of Technology Karnataka and Amit Bhardwaj from Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences.    

Shri. Gaurav Gupta, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of IT, BT and Science and Technology and Commerce and Industries, Government of Karnataka and Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, FRS, Chairman, Conference Executive Committee, Bengaluru INDIA NANO Event and President, INSA & Honorary Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru also addressed the gathering.
