Kerala Floods: 42 People Killed, Over One Lakh Shiffted In Relief Camps

Mumbai: Officials said on Saturday that heavy rains continue in Kerala with 42 people killed in rain-related incidents including floods and landslides, over one lakh people have gone to relief camps.

Officials said 20 people have died in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, and nine people have died in Wayanad in rain-related incidents since August 8, officials said quoting reports received by 7 am.

1,07,699 people have been shifted to 988 relief camps across the state. In the worst affected Wayanad, 24,990 persons are in such camps.

More than 1,000 people have been rescued from the tea garden village of Puthumala in Meppadi, Wayanad, which was rocked by landslides as a section of a hill crashed on several houses and other structures, including a mosque and a temple.

According to Wayanad Sub Collector NSK Umesh, so far seven bodies have been recovered and more than 1,000 people have been evacuated to safer places.

Army and National Disaster Response Force personnel said, “This area is dangerous. We understand that 15 people are still missing.”

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday that the dam can be opened at any time.

The district administration is expected to take a decision in this regard after reviewing the situation this morning.
Apart from Wayanad, incessant rains have led to several landslides and floods in several parts of Malappuram, Kannur and Idukki in the north and central Kerala.

Officials said that many people are feared trapped under debris after major landslides in Wayanad and Malappuram districts. Rescue work has been started.

Southern Railways has cancelled several trains, including the Kannur-Alapuzha Express, on Saturday. Many trains have been partially cancelled with routes cut short to avoid the flooded areas.

Several areas in Thrissur and Kannur districts are waterlogged with many having been moved to relief camps.
