‘Maha Bandh’: Security Tightened, Transport Unaffected

Mumbai: The ‘Maharashtra bandh’, called on Friday by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar’s party to protest against the new citizenship law, saw heavy police deployment across the state with public transport and normal living, largely unaffected PTI reported.

Vanadhikari Bahujan Agadi (VBA) has called for a statewide bandh in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Due to the horrific incidents of stone-pelting in Mumbai and attempts to disrupt road traffic, the shutdown in the metropolis did not have much effect.

An official told PTI that the BEST (BMC’s transport body) bus was pelted by unidentified persons near Swastik Park in suburban Chembur, while VBA supporters gathered in large numbers to protest against the TAA in Thane.

The Prakash Ambedkar-led party has claimed the support of more than 50 political and social organizations besides labour unions for ‘ions bandh’. Ambedkar said that several NGOs and civic groups had demonstrated against the CAA and NRC, but no political party had done so far.

Ambedkar said, “So we are protesting on CAA and NRC. Also, the economy is in a bad state and the attention of the people is being drawn. We will take note of these issues.”

The officer said that in view of the ‘bandh’, the police has tightened security in the state to maintain law and order.

The official said that a sufficient number of police personnel have been deployed in Mumbai and its suburbs to prevent any untoward incident during the bandh.

Apart from Mumbai, VBA supporters participated in the bandh in other districts like Solapur, Sindhudurg, Pune Rural, Kolhapur, Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar, Osmanabad, Beed, Jalna, Parbhani, Latur, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Akola, Bhandara and Yavatmal. he said.

Meanwhile, public transport services in Mumbai, including suburban trains, remained unaffected.
