Maharashtra Allows 1 Lakh Migrant Workers To Go Home After Medical Check-Up Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

Mumbai: State Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde said that the Maharashtra government has allowed more than one lakh migrant sugarcane workers to return to their villages after medical examination.

According to officials, the owners of the sugar factory have to make all their travel and food arrangements.

According to the minister’s office statement, more than 1.31 lakh sugarcane workers are living in temporary shelters available in the premises of 38 sugarcane factories in the state, while many others are stranded at various places.

Migrant workers have been put under hardship due to the ban on movement.

This decision to allow migrant sugarcane workers to return to their ancestral villages would lead to a large number of inter-district movements.

“Good news for my sugarcane worker brothers! You can return to your home (villages) now. The government has issued an order in this regard. Return to home staying within the rules laid down by the government. Take care of your health as well of your villages. Stay inside homes when you return there,” Munde tweeted.

Sharing the circular issued by the government in this regard, Munde said the decision was taken collectively by the Maharashtra State Disaster Management, Assistance and Rehabilitation and Revenue Department.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family said a large group of migrant workers had gathered to seek permission to return to their native states after the nationwide lockout was extended to 3 May. Kalyan on Friday.
