Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray Faces Floor Test At 11 am Tomorrow

Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has written to the state Assembly Secretary to convene a special session of the state Assembly on June 30, with the only agenda of a trust vote against CM Uddhav Thackeray at 11 am.

Koshyari also ordered the deployment of adequate security outside and inside the Assembly to maintain the sanctity of the voting process and to undo any law and order situation that may arise in the wake of “provocative statements made by some leaders.”

In his letter, the governor noted that the current political scenario in Maharashtra paints a very “troubling picture” and there is widespread media coverage that 39 Shiv Sena MLAs have expressed their desire and decision to pull out of Maha Vikas.

“In this background, Raj Bhavan, Mumbai has received an email dated 28.06.2022 from 7 Independent MLAs. It has been said in the letter that Chief Minister of Maharashtra has lost the confidence of majority on the floor of the House, making it mandatory to conduct the floor test at the earliest.”

The Governor also emphasized that the violence against some rebel MLAs in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, including vandalizing their offices, is a threat to his life and that of his family members.

“… I am of the opinion that a floor test for proving the majority of the Chief Minister is imperative to ensure that the Government continues to function with the confidence of the House. As the constitutional head of the state, I must ensure that the government functions with the support and confidence of the House. Thus, I have issued a communication to the Chief Minister calling upon them to prove his majority on the floor of the house on 30.06.2022,” the letter read.

“The Leader of Opposition…personally visited me…I was briefing about the political situation in the state ad thereafter the Leader of Opposition submitted a letter stating that Chief Minister has lost the majority in Vidhan Sabha,” the Governor said in the letter.

On Tuesday night, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis urged the governor to direct the crisis-hit MVA government to prove a majority in the assembly to avoid “political bargaining in the state through undemocratic means”.

Fadnavis, a former chief minister, claimed the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress ruling coalition seemed to be in a minority as 39 Sena MLAs, who belong to the rebel faction, have said they do not support the government.
