Maharashtra: Failed ‘Virginity Test’, Women Faces Divorce Order From Husband

Mumbai: In a shocking incident that unfolded from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, the two sisters married in November last year, currently facing divorce orders, one of which, after failing the ‘virginity test’, on Saturday report stated.

On 27 November 2020 in Kolhapur, the pair of sisters married a pair of brothers. Both families belonged to the Kanjarbhat community. The sisters, after marriage, were subject to the controversial tradition of the community as to whether their hymns were intact. They had intercourse with their husbands in separate rooms in plain white cloth.

Bleeding on white clothes is considered evidence of the virginity of the bride. While one of the women passed a controversial test of virginity, the other was accused of being involved with other men as she didn’t bleed during intercourse.

Subsequently, the husband and in-laws demanded Rs 10 lakh from the sister’s pair and threatened to cut ties with them. The sisters were also physically assaulted and later sent back to their parents’ home. Subsequently, the sister’s mother argued with the members of the ‘jaat panchayat’, who then demanded Rs 40,000 to settle the case. After the money was paid to the members of the caste panchayat, a meeting was held at a temple in February this year.

Accordingly, in February 2021, a ‘jaat panchayat’ was organized in a temple. The complainant alleged that the members of this panchayat agreed to the end of the marriage. The complainant also alleged that she was boycotted by her community,” a report published by The Indian Express stated.

Subsequently, the sister duo and their mother approached the police for help. Based on their complaint, the police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against the husband’s mother-in-law, mother-in-law and some members of the caste panchayat.

Relevant charges under the Maharashtra Prohibition of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act have also been slapped on the accused.
