Maharashtra Government Mandates Marathi Language in Government Offices

Mumbai: In a significant step to promote the Marathi language, the Maharashtra government has made it mandatory for all government, semi-government, and municipal corporation offices to communicate in Marathi. The decision, taken by the Devendra Fadnavis-led government, aims to reinforce Marathi as the primary language of administration in the state.

As per the newly issued government resolution, all employees in government-related offices must use Marathi while interacting with visitors, except those from other states or outside India. Offices will also be required to display signboards encouraging Marathi usage, and official computers will be equipped with Marathi language keyboards.

Any violation of this rule will be considered an act of official indiscipline. Complaints can be lodged with the office in charge, and if the complainant is unsatisfied with the action taken, they may escalate the matter to the Marathi Language Committee of the Maharashtra Legislature.

AI to Promote Marathi Literature

Speaking at the third ‘Vishwa Marathi Sammelan’ at Fergusson College, Pune, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in preserving and promoting Marathi literature. He directed the state’s Marathi Language Department to develop a small AI-based language model that would make the works of great Marathi writers accessible to future generations.

Fadnavis highlighted that with the central government’s recognition of Marathi as a “classical language,” its importance has been further solidified. He recalled Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s historic move to establish Marathi as the official language of Swarajya, asserting that the current era presents an opportunity to transform Marathi into a language of knowledge.

“In the age of AI, if we harness its power, we can create a ChatGPT-like model that enables future generations to explore our rich Marathi literature,” Fadnavis said.

Global Marathi Literary Expansion

The Chief Minister also responded positively to suggestions of organizing a Marathi literary meet abroad. He proposed discussions with international Marathi associations to finalize a suitable location for such an event. Additionally, he assured government support in securing land for a Marathi association in England within the next 15 days and pledged efforts to sustain a Marathi school in Delhi.

With these initiatives, the Maharashtra government aims to reinforce Marathi’s status both within the state and beyond, ensuring its continued growth in administration, literature, and global representation.
