Maharashtra, Kerala Reported 53% Off Total COVID-19 Cases In India Last Week: Govt

Mumbai: The government today said that Kerala and Maharashtra reported 53% of the total COVID-19 cases recorded in India last week.

It added that 80% of new cases in India are being reported from 90 districts, out of which 29 are in Kerala and Maharashtra. Further, 66 districts in the country are reporting a more than 10% COVID-19 positivity rate.

Addressing a press conference, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Lav Agarwal said that 80 per cent of the new cases are coming from 90 districts- indicating the need to focus on these areas. “In the first wave, a peak of 97,894 cases was seen on September 17.

In the second wave, a peak of 4,14,188 cases was recorded on May 7. On an average 3,89,803 cases were registered till May 1-7, since then it has been dropping since then and now from July 3-9, 42,100 were reported on an average,” he said.

“53 per cent of the cases in the country are coming from Maharashtra and Kerala. Maharashtra (21 percent) and Kerala (32 per cent) are the 86 districts with less than 100 cases per day. 80 percent of new cases are coming up. From 90 districts- indicating the need for attention in these areas. Sixty-six districts in India registered more than 10 per cent positivity for the week ended July 8,” Agarwal said.

He said, “The second wave is not over yet. There is still danger. It is necessary to follow the COVID protocol to stop the second wave completely.”

The Health Ministry official said that 8.99 crore vaccine doses were given in April, 6.10 crore in May, and 11.97 crores in June. “On an average 41.61 lakh vaccine doses are being given now (daily),” he added.
