Maharashtra Minister Jitendra Awhad Tests Positive For COVID-19

Mumbai: Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Raj Babbar on Friday confirmed that Maharashtra’s Housing Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Jitendra Awhad has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Taking to Twitter, Raj Babbar prayed to the senior NCP leader for recovery from COVID-19 disease.

“Sad to learn that Maharashtra Housing Minister & dear friend Jitendra Awhad has tested Corona Positive. Always a people’s man, he has been very active all these days trying to help those in need. I wish and pray for his early recovery,” Babbar tweeted this morning.

The comment also came after the Maharashtra government or NCP was to confirm the development.

Earlier, news agency IANS reported on Wednesday that Aadhaar official sources said after being admitted to a hospital here that the Maharashtra minister had indeed tested positive for COVID-19.

The minister’s COVID-19 test report initially went negative on April 13, but another test on Thursday confirmed that the NCP leader was indeed infected with coronovirus. The test report worried the state’s health officials.

IANS reported that Awadh had come in contact with a policeman contracted for COVID-19 in Mumbra town of Thane earlier this month. Police tested positive for COVID-19 in Nashik while on leave last week.

In March, the minister met police to search for suspects to join the Tablighi Jamaat program in Nizamuddin, Delhi. During the operation, 21 foreign nationals participating in the religious event were captured and put in quarantine.
