Maharashtra: Oath-Taking Ceremony Of Newly-Elected MLAs Begins In Assembly

Mumbai: In a special session of the Maharashtra Assembly that began on Wednesday morning, Pro tem speaker Kalidas Kolambkar began administering the oath of office to the 288 newly elected legislators. Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had called the special session.

All the legislators, many of them wide-eyed first-timers started reaching the legislature precincts from 6.30 am onwards to avoid the morning traffic rush in one of the city’s commercial hubs, Nariman Point.

On Tuesday the Kalidas Kolambkar the leader BJP had taken the oath of the protem Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly here at the Raj Bhavan.

“Tomorrow the first session of new assembly begins. From 8.00 am onwards, the oath will be administered to the MLAs,” Kolambkar had said.

This session of today comes after the controversial oath of the Devendra Fadanvis and Ajit Pawar as CM and Deputy CM respectively. But on Tuesday both resigned from their posts as they were not having the majority. This moment turned the dramatic event for the Maharashtrians.

Later in the evening, the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress combine met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and staked claim to form the government, following which the Governor announced that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will take oath as the Chief Minister of the state. Later, Chief Minister-designate Uddhav Thackeray is likely to drop into South Mumbai to interact with his party leaders and legislators.

He was unanimously elected the leader of the Maha Vikas Aghadi for the Chief Minister’s post by the top leaders of the Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party-Congress, bringing down the curtains on the political crisis which had gripped the state after the October 24 election results.
