Maharashtra Police Summons Nupur Sharma Over Remarks On Prophet

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Police has summoned suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on June 22 for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a television debate.

The police asked Sharma to record his statement in connection with his remarks against the Prophet, news agency PTI reported.

Following Sharma’s remarks, an FIR was registered against Sharma by the Mumbra police in the Thane district of Maharashtra. Accordingly, Sharma has been summoned by the Mumbra police to record his statement before the investigating officer.

Addressing a press conference at the Mumbai Police Headquarters, city Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey had said on Monday, “We will call them to record their statement as per law and legal process will be followed.”

The Mumbai Police had registered a case against a former BJP spokesperson for remarks made during a televised news debate on May 28, based on a complaint by Irfan Shaikh, joint secretary of Raza Academy, a Muslim organisation.

Sharma was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief), police had said.

Sharma was suspended from BJP on June 5 over the allegedly insulting remarks against the Prophet.
