Mumbai: The Election Commission of India announced the much-awaited Maharashtra assembly election dates on Saturday. Voting will be held in a single phase on October 21. The announcement was made by Chief Elections Sunil Arora in the national capital today.
The 2019 Assembly elections will be a tough fight between Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, following which allies have again disputed the seat-sharing agreement in the state.
The 288-member strong Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is crucial to the BJP’s prospects for the upcoming assembly elections across the country, more so since it was the first state election that the saffron party swept to power at the Center in 2014. Maharashtra has a total of 8.94 crore voters.
Meanwhile, the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party have agreed to contest 125 seats, leaving the rest to smaller parties. According to reports, Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will contest 80-90 seats.
