Maharashtra to Build Detention Centre for Illegal Bangladeshi Migrants, Says CM Fadnavis

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to construct a detention center in Mumbai to house illegal Bangladeshi migrants, stating that such individuals cannot be held directly in jails. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for dedicated facilities in accordance with legal norms for handling foreign nationals detained for illegal activities.
“In recent times, we have seen cases involving drugs, illegal entry, and illegal Bangladeshi nationals. As they are foreign nationals, they cannot be kept directly in our jails. They need to be housed in detention camps,” said CM Fadnavis.
He further explained that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had allocated land for the facility, but it did not meet the required norms. “We have asked BMC for another suitable land to build a proper detention centre in Mumbai,” he added.
The announcement comes amid increasing enforcement actions against illegal migrants in the state. In a recent operation, Thane police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Cell arrested a Bangladeshi couple, Sabuj Sanowar Shaikh and Bishti Sabuj Sheikh, living illegally in Kalyan. The couple reportedly crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border without authorization and was apprehended during a raid on Thursday.
Police have booked the couple under various sections of the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act. Additionally, a case has been registered against their landlord, Mustafa Munshi, who rented them a house despite knowing about their illegal entry into India.
The proposed detention center is expected to streamline the handling of such cases, ensuring proper facilities for those detained while adhering to legal protocols. The initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to addressing the issue of illegal immigration comprehensively.
