Making A Debut In Boxing Day Test Is A Very Big Opportunity For Shubman Gill: Gautam Gambhir

Mumbai: Gautam Gambhir said that he wants the Indian team management to give Shubman Gill a long place in the Test team. The 20-year-old Gill is all set to make his Test debut against Australia in the Boxing Day Test.

The debutant will replace Prithvi Shaw in the playing XI after the later’s dismal show in the opening Test at Adelaide Oval.

“Only time will tell whether Shubman Gill will succeed as an opener or not. But a chance to make his debut in a Boxing Day Test in Australia, it grew much more than that,” Gautam Gambhir said on Sports Today.

The veteran opener said that the team management should take Gill into confidence and give him a long time in the team.

He said, ‘But again I hope that the team management will not pick him on hope. Pick him up on trust. Because if you take someone in confidence, then you give him a long chance or a long run. When you choose someone over hope, you only hope that I hope he does well,” he said.

Gambhir believes that Gill should be included in the playing eleven even after Rohit Sharma’s return to Team India in the third Test.

“So, if you choose Shubman Gill, I’m sure they will be thinking of showing confidence in him.” Even if Rohit Sharma comes back, he has to hit somewhere in that batting order. It would be very unfair on Shubman Gill if he opens the batting and reaches 20-30 and then suddenly Rohit Sharma comes back and Gill finds himself out of the playing XI,” emphasized Gambhir.

39-year-old Gill wants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to get an endorsement under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

“Not going to be fair on that. If you decide to choose Shubman Gill, take him in confidence and trust him and maybe give him the same runs as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma got under MS Dhoni,” said Gambhir.

After losing the first Test in Adelaide, India will lock horns against Australia on December 26 at MCG in a Boxing Day clash.
