Mamata Banerjee Ask Centre To Provide Rs 10,000 Financial Aid To Each Migrant Workers

Mumbai: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday, citing economic constraints due to COVID-19, urged the Center to provide financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to every migrant laborer, including people from the unorganized sector.

“People have been facing economic hardship of unimaginable proportions bcz of the ongoing pandemic. I appeal to the Central Govt to transfer Rs10,000 each as one-time assistance to migrant laborers including people in the unorganized sector. A portion of PM-CARES could be used for this,” Banerjee tweeted.

Earlier, the PM-KRES (Prime Minister’s Civil Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations) Fund Trust allocated Rs 3,100 crore for the fight against COVID-19, of which Rs 2,000 crore would be used to purchase ventilators, Rs 1,000 crore 100 crores for assistance to migrant laborers and Rs. 100 crore for the development of coronavirus vaccine.

The trust, formed on 27 March 2020, is headed by the Prime Minister (ex-officio). The other ex-officio members of the Trust are Defense Minister, Home Minister and Finance Minister.
