Mamata Banerjee Warns CAA Protesters Of Strict Action Amid Vandalism Across State

Mumbai: Following ongoing cases of violence and vandalism in West Bengal, among those protesting against the new citizenship law (CAA), Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday warned of stern action against the miscreants.

Banerjee said in a statement issued from the Chief Minister’s Office, “Do not take the law into your own hands. Do not keep roadblocks and rail barriers and create problems for common people on the roads.”

“Do not harm government assets. Strict action will be taken against those who create disturbances,” Banerjee said in the statement.

He further reiterated that the revised Citizenship Act and the proposed Countrywide National Civil Register (NRC) will not be implemented in West Bengal.

“This is my request, don’t create confusion in people,” she said.

Her statement comes after a mob set fire to a railway station complex in Howrah district of West Bengal. Hundreds of protesters also beat up the security personnel, who were guarding it.

Protesters also blocked the railway tracks at Jangipur, Poradanga, and Farakka stations in Murshidabad district, and Nalpur and Bauria stations of South Easter Railway in Howrah district.

Protesters had been blocking roads in and around the Sankrail railway station, which comes under South Eastern Railway, since morning and had also set a few shops on fire.

Furthermore, three state buses were vandalised in Suti of the same district this morning. The mob torched one of the buses after forcing out the passengers.

Train movement between Lalgola and Palashi stations has reportedly been obstructed. In Howrah district, six buses were torched on Kona Expressway. Police had to resort to baton charge to remove the road blockade.
