Mashrafe Mortaza Blame’s Himself For “disappointing” ICC World Cup

Mumbai: Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza had to let himself down for failing to reach the last four of the World Cup.

Mashrafe told reporters after returning to Dhaka from the team, “We are definitely disappointed. If some results had gone on our way, then we could have reached the semi-finals.”

He said, “Overall, the way we played was very positive … but we could not fulfil our expectations.” He said, “If we had won the last match, we could have achieved fifth place. But I am sure all the spectators and the players wanted that the team made the top four.”

After defeating South Africa in Australia in Old Trafford in the last match before the semi-final, Bangladesh came to eighth place at the end of the World Cup league phase. Bangladesh defeated South Africa, West Indies and Afghanistan and lost to some top teams so that they could make a place in the semi-finals until their debut game.

He said, “Until the match in India, we had an official semi-final chance. But besides Shakib (Al Hasan) and Mushfiqur (Mushfiqur Rahim), there was” lack of consistency, “said Mohammed Saifuddin playing spectacular cricket. A whole week was interrupted by rain, which hampered us and helped some teams.”

He went on adding, “As a captain, if I fail to deliver the expected results to the team, then there will always be criticism. I have to take responsibility for the entire team. It is normal,” he said. “I should take full responsibility as I should. But I would like to say that players face criticism throughout the world, especially after a tournament or series. And after the World Cup, it is very common.”

Bangladesh is likely to tour Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series at the end of this month.
