MEA Issues Travel Advisory for Indian Nationals in Syria
Mumbai: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has urged Indian nationals to avoid travelling to Syria and advised those already in the conflict-ridden nation to leave immediately.
“In view of the situation prevailing in Syria, Indian nationals are advised to avoid all travel to Syria until further notification,” the MEA stated. It encouraged those in Syria to depart on the earliest available commercial flights. For those unable to leave, the advisory recommended exercising extreme caution, prioritizing safety, and minimizing movements.
Indian nationals currently in Syria are encouraged to maintain contact with the Indian Embassy in Damascus, which has provided a helpline for assistance: +963 993385973.
Indian Nationals in Syria Urged to Stay Connected
The MEA estimates around 90 Indian nationals are in Syria, including 14 individuals working with United Nations organizations. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal assured that the Indian mission is actively monitoring the situation.
“We are closely following developments. Our mission remains in regular contact with Indian nationals to ensure their safety and security,” Jaiswal stated.
Escalating Violence in Syria
The advisory comes amidst a surge in violence, with rebel groups intensifying offensives. Recent attacks, including the seizure of Hama and an advance toward Homs, have raised concerns about increasing instability in areas under President Bashar al-Assad’s control.
Since the Syrian civil war began in 2011, it has claimed over 300,000 civilian lives and displaced millions, according to United Nations estimates.
Indian nationals are advised to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety until the situation stabilizes.
