MHA Orders Probe Into Rajiv Gandhi Foundation And Other Two Trusts

Mumbai: The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate the investigation of the violation of various legal provisions of PMLA, I-T Act, FCRA by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust and Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.

The investigation committee will be headed by the Special Director of Enforcement Directorate.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Gandhi family and the Congress of their ties with China, claiming that China had funded the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Established on June 21, 1991, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation is eyeing a storm over its funding from organizations associated with the Chinese government.

Last month, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad sought an explanation from the Congress as to why the Chinese Embassy donated nearly Rs 90 lakh to the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

Prasad further said that there is a reason Congress is not condemning China because it has been funded by China.

Notably, Congress President Sonia Gandhi is the Chairperson of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation while former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram are members of the board.
