Mike Pompeo Denies Special Powers To Hong Kong

Mumbai: US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo said that he has certified the Congress the scrapping of special treatment to Hong Kong under the US law in the same way it was applied when the territory was under British law Before July 1997, according to the Reuters.

He asserted that Hong Kong does not continue to warrant pre-1997 autonomy.

“No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground,” Pompeo said.

He claimed that China’s plan of imposing new legislation over Hong Kong was “only the latest in a series of actions that fundamentally undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms.”

The decision rests on President Trump to end or continue the economic privileges to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong being a former British Colony works under one country two systems policy that grants it special autonomy.
