Ministry Of Home Affairs Banned Jamaat-e-Islami In Jammu And Kashmir
Mumbai: Under Section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Home Ministry (MHA) banned separatist groups Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.
The separatist group played a so-called role in anti-national and subversive activities and was closely linked with terrorist organizations, alleged officials. After participating in a high-level meeting on security organized under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the notification of the ban was issued by the MHA.
“JeI is in close touch with terrorist organizations and is supporting militancy and extremism at J & K and elsewhere. The JeI is supporting the claims for the protection of a portion of the Indian territory from the Union and is supporting the terrorist and separatist groups fighting for this purpose by indulging in activities and expressions aimed at inhibiting the regional integrity of India. JeI is involved in anti-national and subversive activities in the country intended to cause disaffection,” MHA stated.
Jamaat-e-Islami was one of the original and most influential Islamic organizations, and was the first of its kind to develop “an ideology based on the modern revolutionary concept of Islam”.
The group split into separate independent organisations in India and Pakistan—Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind—following the Partition of India in 1947. Other groups related to or inspired by Jamaat-e-Islami developed in Bangladesh, Kashmir, Britain, and Afghanistan (see below). The Jamaat-e-Islami parties maintain ties internationally with other Muslim groups.
Last week, the police raided Kashmir and arrested more than 150 Jamaat leaders, including senior leaders. Police said that these arrests should be considered as ‘preparation’ for the upcoming elections. Senior police officials allegedly said that the separatist group was actively involved in promoting insurgency.
