MJ Akbar And Tarun Tejpal Suspended From Editors Guild Of India

Mumbai :  The Editors Guild of India (EGI) have decided to suspend the journalist-turned politician MJ Akbar until he would clear all the allegations of sexual harassment made against him by many female journalists.

“Guild officials discussed EC’s comments and took a decision on this matter. It has agreed with the majority that Mr. Akbar should be suspended from the Guild until the court case has been lodged” a statement issued by the EGI read.

The Editors Guild (EGI) had demanded the views of its Executive Committee (EC) that what action should be taken between one of the inactive members Mr. MJ Akbar and one of his previous Presidents Mr. Tarun Tejpal and Mr. Gautam Officer.

The light of accusations of sexual harassment against them by many female journalists.  MJ Akbar is an Indian politician, who served as the Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs until 17 October, 2018 when he had to step down due to a number of sexual misconduct allegations against him from numerous women who had worked with him over the years.

Priya Ramani, the first journalist among the other women, who filed case against Akbar for his sexual misconduct, were later on Akbar filed a defemation case against her.

“There was also consensus that Mr Tejpal be suspended too, until the conclusion of his trial and the Guild should write to Mr Adhikari to seek his response,” EGI’s statement added.

The guild decided that he would ask the officer’s response before deciding his membership.
