Modi Government Insensitive Towards Farmers, Says Sonia Gandhi

On the suspension of 12 Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha, Sonia Gandhi termed the decision as ‘unprecedented and unacceptable’

Mumbai: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday hit out the Modi government over farmers issues and said that they are ‘insensitive towards farmers & common people.

While speaking at the Parliamentary CCP meeting, Sonia Gandhi said, “Let’s honour the 700 farmers who sacrificed their lives (during their stir). Modi Govt is insensitive towards farmers & common people. The rise in prices of essential commodities is burning the monthly budget of every family.”

“Congress will insist on the discussion in Parliament on challenges facing the agriculture sector,” she added.

On the suspension of 12 Opposition MPs from the Rajya Sabha, Sonia Gandhi termed the decision as ‘unprecedented and unacceptable’.

“We stand in solidarity with the suspended MPs,” she added.

Last week, on Monday, 12 MPs, six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Shiv Sena, and one each from the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist), were suspended after the House passed a motion moved by the government under Rule 256 for their “unruly and violent behaviour” in the Upper House during the monsoon session.

Sonia Gandhi also demanded a full-fledged discussion in Parliament on the border issues with the neighbours.

Gandhi further spoke on Nagaland firing and said that the Centre’s regret over the incident is not enough, adding that credible steps should be taken to prevent the recurrence of such tragedies.

As many as 14 civilians were killed over the weekend in the Mon district of Nagaland in a botched counter-insurgency operation by the Indian Army and the violence thereafter.
