Mumbai: 11 Dead, 8 Injured As Residential Building Collapses In Malad West

Mumbai At least 11 people were killed and eight others were injured when a residential building collapsed in Mumbai’s Malad West on Wednesday night, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

A search and rescue operation is underway amid fears that more people may be trapped under the debris.

The collapse engulfed a nearby residential structure. The municipal corporation said it has also affected another residential structure in the area which is now in a “dangerous condition”. Residents are being evacuated from the affected structures,” the BMC said.

Vishal Thakur, DCP Zone 11, Mumbai has informed that 15 people including women and children have been rescued. They were shifted to a nearby hospital. More people are feared trapped under the rubble. He said that the teams are here to save the people.

Additional CP Dilip Sawant has informed that so far 18 people have been rescued and the police will conduct a proper investigation into the incident. He said, “It is an unfortunate incident. It was a G+2 building that collapsed on another building. 18 people have been rescued, out of which 11 have died. Police will carry out a proper investigation and take further action,” he said.

Mumbai has been witnessing heavy rainfall for the past two days. On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘Orange’ alert in the Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane districts of Maharashtra for the next four days.

Mumbai’s Santacruz observed 164.8 mm rainfall from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm, while Colaba received 32.2 mm rainfall, the IMD reported.
