Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed vibrant Dahi Handi celebrations on Saturday as thousands of people gathered across the city to mark Krishna Janmashtami. However, the festivities were marred by injuries and two reported deaths, with 376 Govindas requiring medical attention during the celebrations.

376 Govindas Injured During Dahi Handi Celebrations

Of the 376 injured Govindas, 53 remain admitted to hospitals, while another 37 are undergoing treatment. As many as 286 participants were discharged after receiving medical care.

The injured Govindas were reportedly treated at several major hospitals across Mumbai, including KEM Hospital, Nair Hospital, Sion Hospital, Rajawadi Hospital, HBT Trauma Care Centre, V. Desai Hospital and BDBA Hospital.

Authorities are yet to provide further updates on the condition of those who continue to receive treatment.

Two Deaths Reported During Celebrations

The celebrations were also overshadowed by two reported deaths in separate incidents. According to reports, the deceased have been identified as seven-year-old Rudra Kadam and 34-year-old Swapnil Sadanand Navar.

Rudra Kadam was reportedly a resident of Malad, while Swapnil Sadanand Navar lived in Ghansoli. Both reportedly died during the Dahi Handi festivities.

Further details surrounding the circumstances of the two deaths are awaited.

Mumbai Witnesses Grand Dahi Handi Celebrations

Despite the incidents, Mumbai witnessed widespread celebrations as Govinda teams assembled at various locations to participate in Dahi Handi events.

The traditional celebration involves teams forming several tiers of human pyramids to reach and break an earthen pot suspended high above the ground. The handi is traditionally associated with curd, milk or butter and commemorates stories from Lord Krishna’s childhood.

Large crowds gathered at venues across the city, with spectators cheering and dancing as Govinda teams attempted to scale the human pyramids and break the suspended handis.

The festival is among Mumbai’s most popular annual celebrations, drawing large participation from Govinda groups and spectators. However, the physical risks involved in forming multi-level human pyramids can result in falls and injuries, making safety arrangements an important aspect of the festivities.

With hundreds of participants reportedly injured this year and two deaths recorded, further details on the incidents and the condition of those still undergoing treatment are awaited.
