Mumbai On A Shut Down Due To Heavy Rains

Mumbai: Widespread devastation has been caused due to unprecedented rains during the last 24 hours. There’s a heavy rainfall red-code alert. Police and the government has requested people to exercise caution as heavy rains continue to batter Mumbai.

With the weather department predicting heavy rains on Monday, the state government announced a holiday for schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad. Central Railway services between CSMT-Thane and CSMT-Mankhurd were paralysed for the better part of the day. In bad news for those staying beyond Kalyan, an official said it may take a day or two to restore services on the Kalyan-Karjat corridor.

Office of the Chief Minister of Maharashtra tweeted, “All Government and Semi-Government employees in MMR Region are allowed to report late on their duties. The government also appeals to people to stay safe at home if it is not necessary to go out. All emergency services to function as usual.#MumbaiRainsLiveUpdate.”

It further tweeted, “Due to the IMD warning for tomorrow, holiday declared for schools & colleges in Mumbai & MMR, Palghar, Thane, Raigad districts. #MumbaiRainslive updates #MumbaiRains”.

Even though the rainiest July in over a century ends, the monsoon rains are in no mood to pause over the Mumbai region. Forecasts indicate that the extended wet spell is likely to persist during the first week of August.
