Mumbai Stops Vaccination For 3 Days, Civic Body Cites Vaccine Shortage

Mumbai: Mumbai, which is undergoing a deadly second wave of COVID-19, has stopped the vaccination campaign for three days, which has come down significantly.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that the existing stock of supplements has been exhausted, following which the vaccination campaign for the 18-44 age group, which was earlier scheduled to start from May 1, was also postponed. People over the age of 45 are currently being vaccinated.

“BMC will not conduct any vaccination camps on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as the existing stock is exhausted. With this, the civic body is likely to postpone its vaccination drive for the 18-44 age category beyond May 1. If fresh supplies were received, vaccination will resume, it added”, the statement released by the civic body read.

The corporation has also been stressed that people above 45 should not fear that they will not be vaccinated when the drive starts for the 18-44 age group.

“Both are separate programs, and whenever vaccine doses are available, the priority will be for the age group over 45,” the civic body said.

It is also clarified that people who have received the first dose of the vaccine should not worry if there is a longer interval before taking the second dose. The statement said, “If there is a longer lag, the body develops some opposing bodies against COVID-19.”

Apart from Maharashtra, several other states like Punjab, Tamil Nadu, and national capital Delhi have flagged low vaccine stocks. For the uninitiated, the nationwide vaccination for people in the 18-44 age group is scheduled to start from May 1 and registration for the same is open on the Cowin app.
